Will Xiaomi build smartphone plant in India?

By Ha Man-joo, India correspondent, AsiaToday - Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi will likely build a plant in Andhra Pradesh State in India. Its recent act of establishing a hoarding with a 'Make in India' logo at Visakhapatnam airport hints at the possibility of Xiaomi building its plant in the port city of Andhra Pradesh.

Xiaomi has not made any official announcements about its manufacturing plans in India so far. Hugo Barra, Vice-President of Xiaomi, said, "You will see the phrase 'Good Morning Visakhapatnam!' when you arrive at the airport terminal starting from this weekend. We want to make a step further in India." Then he asked, "Can you guess what this means?"

Xiaomi had earlier said that it was reviewing options for manufacturing in India. Apart from Xiaomi, other smartphone makers such as Asus, Motorola and Gionee are also considering manufacturing in India.
