The 10th anniversary production of the musical Phantom will open on May 31 at the Grand Theater of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul.
Phantom is a musical based on Gaston Leroux’s novel The Phantom of the Opera, created by playwright Arthur Kopit and composer Maury Yeston. It is a separate work from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, having premiered in 1991. The story follows the life of the Phantom, a man with extraordinary musical talent who lives in hiding beneath the opera house due to his disfigured appearance.
The show was first staged in Korea in 2015 and marks its 10th anniversary this year. It garnered attention for its large-scale, three-level stage recreating the Paris Opera House and for ballet sequences portraying the Phantom’s past.
This season, Park Hyo-shin, Kai, and Jeon Dong-seok will take turns playing the lead role of the Phantom. Park returns to the role for the first time in nine years, having last performed it in 2016. The role of Christine Daaé, a young woman who rises to become the opera house’s star under the Phantom’s guidance, will be played by Lee Ji-hye, Song Eun-hye, and Jang Hye-rin.
Min Young-ki and Hong Kyoung-soo will appear as Gérard Carrière, the former manager of the Paris Opera House. Lisa, Jeon Soo-mi, and Yoon Sa-bong have been cast as Madame Carlotta, who claims the diva spotlight despite her terrible singing voice.
Following this season’s run, EMK Musical Company plans to launch a new production with revamped sets and costumes. The show runs through August 11.
