Former President Yoon Suk-yeol has been removed from office following the Constitutional Court's impeachment ruling. As a result, he must vacate the official residence in Hannam-dong of Seoul, and is expected to return to his private residence in Seocho-dong, or seek an alternative location.
According to the Presidential Office on April 6, Yoon has been staying at the official residence since the ruling, contemplating his future plans. On the day of the ruling, he expressed regret through his legal representatives, stating, "I am deeply sorry for not meeting expectations." He also addressed his supporters, saying, "Please do not be discouraged and have courage." Without mentioning his own future, he added, "It was a great honor to have served the Republic of Korea."
Observers anticipate that Yoon's future actions will become clearer once he leaves the official residence. Given the public's keen interest, his departure is likely to be broadcast live, revealing his demeanor and any messages he may convey. In 2017, former President Park Geun-hye left the Blue House two days after her impeachment was upheld, stating, "I will take responsibility for all the outcomes." Unlike Park, who maintained a low profile focusing on legal matters post-impeachment, Yoon may actively engage in 'private residence politics' by issuing messages related to the upcoming presidential election.
Following the Constitutional Court's ruling, Yoon met with the leadership of the People Power Party at the Hannam-dong residence, urging them to "prepare well for the presidential election centered on the party and ensure victory." In a statement, he also affirmed, "Although I have stepped down from the presidency, I will remain by your side."
