Korean director Jung Yu-mi’s animated short Glasses has been officially invited to the short film competition of the 78th Cannes Critics’ Week, set to open on May 3, according to production company Match Cut on April 18.
The film tells a psychological coming-of-age story about confronting and reconciling with one’s inner shadow. It was completed with support from the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) and the Bucheon International Animation Festival (BIAF).
Jung, who studied fine arts before training in animation directing at the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), first gained international recognition when her second film Dust Kid was invited to the Directors’ Fortnight at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in 2009—the first Korean animation to do so.
She later broke new ground again with Math Test, which competed at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival, and won the Grand Prix at the Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films in 2013 with Love Games. Both were also firsts for Korean animation.
Critics’ Week, an independent sidebar organized by the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics (SRAC), is known for highlighting innovative and original voices in cinema.
This year’s Cannes Film Festival, running from May 3 to 24 in the southern French city of Cannes, has drawn disappointment in Korea as no Korean feature films were invited to either official or unofficial sections.
