Former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo will officially declare his candidacy for the presidency on April 14, unveiling key policy pledges aimed at establishing what he calls the "7th Republic."
Hong is scheduled to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. at his campaign office, “Mooh Dae Hong,” located in Daehwa Building in Yeouido, Seoul.
He has previously alluded to several of his core campaign promises via Facebook, including reforms to the national college entrance exam system, the abolition of the Constitutional Court, creation of a constitutional tribunal within the Supreme Court, introduction of a president-vice president system with a four-year double term, reinstatement of the death penalty, and military reform.
On the same day, Hong's campaign announced the recruitment of Lee Young-soo, chairman of the national committee for the group “Saemi-jun,” or New Future Preparation Alliance.
Saemi-jun, a key conservative political forum composed of influential People Power Party members, has played a significant role in shaping party sentiment during past primaries and leadership contests. The group’s official role in Hong’s campaign will be detailed in the first round of organizational announcements.
